Bruce Highway

The 1,679-kilometre Bruce Highway connects Brisbane and Cairns, passing along the eastern coast. The highway is named after Harry Bruce, Queensland's Minister for Works in the mid-1930s. At its southern end, the route merges into the Gateway Motorway on Brisbane's outskirts.

The highway ran through most of Queensland's coastal cities until bypasses diverted traffic around major centres to ease traffic congestion.
