Baratta Creek

The creek system collectively known as the Barrattas rises in the Leichhardt Range towards Ravenswood and flows in a north-easterly direction roughly parallel to the Haughton and Burdekin Rivers across wetlands in the northern part of Burdekin Delta, discharging into Bowling Green Bay near Jerona.

While the system includes a multitude of small waterways, the three most significant streams were formerly crossed by low-level bridges and signposted as West, Middle and East Baratta.
The lie of the land makes it easy to underestimate the system's length (109 kilometres) and the size of its catchment (1,831 square kilometres). A mean annual flow of 178 gigalitres means the creeks frequently threaten rail and road transport during the wet season.

The name is believed to be derived from the Bindal people's name for a chain of lagoons found in the area.
