Dry Tropics



North Queensland's Dry Tropics region covers an area of approximately 133,432 square kilometres, most of it within the Burdekin River's catchment. The region also includes the Don, Haughton and Ross Rivers and Crystal Creek coastal catchments. The region's population is mainly concentrated in the major population centres:
Outside these centres, the population is scattered across numerous pastoral properties and mine sites. Economic activity in the dry tropics focuses on horticulture, sugar cane farming and beef production, with commercial fishing, aquaculture, mining, energy industries and tourism playing significant roles. The area around the Burdekin Delta contains Northern Australia’s largest irrigation area, with ground and surface water irrigating approximately 1,100 square kilometres.
