Mount Isa (City)
The City of Mount Isa, located on Kalkatunga and Indjilandji country in northwest Queensland, lies to the west of Cloncurry Shire and extends to the Northern Territory border. The City covers the urban locality of Mount Isa, with its lead, copper, silver and zinc mines and 43,713 square kilometres of the surrounding countryside. Cattle grazing and tourism are other significant industries.
The Shire of Barclay Tableland, based in Camooweal, was incorporated from sections of the existing Burke and Cloncurry Shirers in February 1914 and renamed the Shire of Barkly Tableland in August 1919. Mount Isa's subsequent growth as the mines developed saw it renamed Shire of Mount Isa in July 1963, with the administration centre relocated to Mount Isa and part of the Shire of Cloncurry added to its territory. It became the City of Mount Isa in May 1968 when the population passed 18,000.
