Mornington Shire
Located on the traditional lanmds of the Lardil, Yangkaal, Kaiadilt and Gangalidda people, the Shire of Mornington covers twenty-six islands in the Wellesley Islands Group in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Shire's administrative centre is the township of Gununa on Mornington Island.
The shire was created when the Queensland Government decided to take control of the former Aboriginal mission on the islands operated by the Uniting Church of Australia in 1978. While the local community objected and asked the federal government to intervene, negotiations between the state and federal authorities saw the community become self-governing under a so-called "local government" model.
