Croydon Shire



Located in Tagalaka country in northwestern Queensland's Gulf Country, the Shire of Croydon, administered from the town of Croydon, covers an area of 29,498 square kilometres. While the shire's current population is less than three hundred, the area had a population of seven thousand in its heyday during the 1880s gold rushes, with a Divisional Board and a separate Town Council.
The Croydon Division was created under the Divisional Boards Act at the end of 1887 and became the Shire of Croydon at the end of March 1903. The Town of Croydon was merged into the Shire at the beginning of January 1909.
