Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire
Located in Yidinjdji country east and southeast of Cairns on Cape Grafton, the Aboriginal Shire of Yarrabah is managed under a Deed of Grant in Trust under the Local Government (Community Government Areas) Act 2004. Originally established as an Anglican Mission in 1892 and administered by the church until the 1960s, Yarrabah fell under the control of Queensland's Department of Aboriginal and Islander Affairs, which ran the community's affairs until late October 1987 when a Deed of Grant in Trust passed the responsibility to a Community Council elected by Aboriginal people living in the community. Since the Shire does not operate under the Local Government Act, the Shire Council's responsibilities include fisheries, alcohol management, and employment initiatives.
