Torres Strait Island Region
The Torres Strait Island Region, covering part of the Torres Strait Islands, was created in March 2008 out of fifteen autonomous Island Councils during a period of statewide local government reform. It has offices in each community, and satellite services in Thursday Island and Cairns, which lie outside the region. The Region effectively intersects with the Shire of Torres, which administers the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula and several islands, including Thursday Island, Horn Island, and Prince of Wales Island.
The fifteen previous autonomous councils were:
Badu (Mulgrave Island)
Boigu (Talbot Island)
Dauan (Mt. Cornwallis Island)
Erub (Darnley Island)
Kirirri (Hammond Island)
Iama (Yam Island)
Arkai (Kubin Community at Mua Island)
Mabuiag (Jervis Island)
Masig (Yorke Island)
Mer (Murray Island)
Poruma (Coconut Island)
Saibai
Wug (St. Pauls Community at Mua Island)
Ugar (Stephen Island)
Warraber (Sue Island)
