Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire

Located on Thaayorre country on western Cape York Peninsula, the Aboriginal Shire of Pormpuraaw is managed under a Deed of Grant in Trust under the Local Government (Community Government Areas) Act 2004.
The Pormpuraaw community was formerly the Anglican Church's Edward River Mission, established in 1938 to draw Aboriginal people from the region from their traditional lands into the mission settlement. Managing the mission passed into the Queensland Government's Department of Aboriginal and Islander Affairs in 1967. Those arrangements continued until the end of July 1987, when a Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) given to the community established a town council elected by the community. The Pormpuraaw Council comprises four elected Aboriginal residents and a mayor, holding four-year terms of office.
As the Shire is not operated under the Local Government Act and operates the land on behalf of the community, the council's responsibilities include fisheries, alcohol management, operating some commercial enterprises.
