Douglas Shire

Located in Kuku Yalanji and Djabuganjdji country on the North Queensland coast north of Cairns, the Douglas Shire, administered from Mossman, covers an area of 2,428 square kilometres. On 3 June 1880, the northern part of Cairns Division, one of the seventy-four divisions established under the Divisional Boards Act 1879, was excised to create the Douglas Division, which became the Shire of Douglas on 31 March 1903.

Although the Local Government (Reform Implementation) Act 2007 amalgamated the Douglas Shire and the City of Cairns to form the Cairns Region on 15 March 2008, discontent within the former Shire resulted in a de-amalgamation referendum in March 2013. Despite the Queensland Treasury's suggestion that the Shire was unviable as a separate entity and strong opposition from many parties, the citizens of the former Douglas Shire voted for de-amalgamation. The shire was re-established on 1 January 2014.
