Cook Shire
Queensland's largest local government area, covering an area of 105,718 square kilometres in the eastern and central Cape York Peninsula, the Shire of Cook was established in 1919 by amalgamating the Daintree and Hann Shires.
Both former shires were among the seventy-four Divisions created in November 1879 under the Divisional Boards Act. Under the Local Authorities Act 1902's provisions, they became the Shires of Daintree and Hann at the end of March 1903.
The Borough of Cooktown proclaimed a municipality in April 1876 under the Municipal Institutions Act 1864, subsequently became the Town of Cooktown, which was absorbed back into Cook Shire in August 1932.
Several Aboriginal communities administered under Deeds of Grant in Trust by community councils were part of the Shire until they were formally excised as Aboriginal Shires in 2005.
