Guwinmal

The Guwinmal people (a.k.a. Koinmerburra, Koinjmal, Kungmal and other variants) spoke an extinct dialect of Darumbal and are the traditional custodians of an estimated 4,100 square kilometres of territory along the coastal strip between Broad Sound and Cape Palmerston, including the area around St Lawrence. Inland, their territory stretches from the western slopes of Pine Mountain in the Normanby Range and the Styx River to the Coast Range and,as far south as Marlborough. They exploited large areas of mangrove mudflats, using bark canoes to navigate the wetland waterways.
Originally, they consisted of several kin groups, including the Mamburra and, possibly, the Bauwiwarra, who may have been a horde of the Darumbal. Early in the 20th century, displaced Guwinmal kin groups could be found living at places like Yaamba and Bombandy, though those locations were well outside Guwinmal country.
