The Bookshelf
Think of this overambitious project as a set of bookshelves on top of a filing cabinet. Each of the project's strands has its place on the shelf. The filing cabinet contains folders of individual files with details of people, places, events, and other matters. The main strands comprise one or more volumes.
About The North is an introduction and includes material from the project's early stages that did not find a home elsewhere. I deal with my experience of The North and related matters in Recollection and Reconstruction and Reflection and Reminiscence.
Origins, Indigenes and Antecedents is a trilogy covering the lead-up to the first settlers' arrival in North Queensland in 1861.
Mapping The North comes in four volumes. Two combine to form Prelude: Tracing an Outline. In Perceptions and Misconceptions, I explore what European navigators expected to find in the Southern Hemisphere and the historical processes that brought them into Northern waters. Six Voyages gives detailed accounts of the expeditions that delivered an initial outline of the Northern coast. Those two volumes cover the period before the First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay.
Adding Detail continues the narrative from 1788 to Queensland's separation from New South Wales. Another (provisionally titled North Queensland will take the narrative through to Federation and beyond.
Themes and Variations emerged through the writing process without slotting neatly into the project's other components.
Alongside those volumes, which are all my own work, we have volumes of Reference Material compiled during the writing process and various Texts, Sources and Readings I have used.
Each volume consists of several parts, broken into smaller sections. So, from here, most pages contain links to one or more PDF files. Click on the page title to open the relevant file in a new browser window or download the file for later reading.
Underneath the bookshelves, The Filing Cabinet's contents can be accessed from hyperlinks within the PDF texts on the bookshelves. They are also collected in volumes of reference material devoted to people, places and other matters.
