Mutumui



The shore-dwelling Mutumui people's traditional territory covers an estimated 2,600 square kilometres around Murdoch Point, Bathurst Bay and Cape Melville southwards, at Barrow Point and the vicinity of the Starcke and Jeannie Rivers. Occasional incursions into the sandstone hinterland yielded honey, possums and rock wallabies.

The Mutumui comprised several hordes or bands, which spoke distinct dialects of Eibole (now extinct) with Ongwara ('northern talk') spoken in their northern portion of the territory. Other hordes included the Karbungga at the Jeannie River and the Mbambylmu at the Jack River. The Ithu people on Noble Island and islands in the Howick Group off Barrow Point, sometimes considered as a separate entity, may have been one of the Mutumui horded;
