Meriam Mir (language)
The Eastern Torres Strait language Meriam Mir (a.k.a. Miriam, Meryam, Mer, Mir, Miriam-Mir, Eastern, Isten, Esten, and Able Able) spoken by the people of Mer (Murray Island), Waier and Dauar, Erub (Darnley Island), and Ugar (Stephens Island) is the only Papuan language in Australian territory, although linguists disagree about its relationship to other New Guinean languages.
