Queensland's Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897 established the first separate legal control over Aboriginal peoples. It was more restrictive than contemporary legislation in other states and also introduced Aboriginal reserves to control First Nations people's dwelling places and movement.
