Ezra Firth
Yorkshire stonemason Ezra Firth, the original squatter who established Mount Surprise station, arrived in Australia in 1849 and did well out of the Victorian gold rushes to Ballarat and Bendigo.
After he returned to England to collect his wife, Eliza, Firth brought his family to the Queensland frontier in 1864. Until the Palmer gold rush, his Fossilbrook station remained the northern frontier's furthest outpost.
