Majapahit

Centred on the island of Java, the Hindu-Buddhist empire of Majapahit rose to power after the Mongol invasion of Java in 1293 and reached its height in the mid-14th century. At its height, Majapahit and its tributary states covered almost the entire Nusantara archipelago. After a civil war that weakened control over its vassal states, the empire slowly declined and collapsed in 1527 after an invasion by the Sultanate of Demak.

As one of the region's last major Hindu-Buddhist empires and one of the most powerful empires in Southeast Asia, it is sometimes seen as the precedent for modern-day Indonesia. However, its influence extended beyond modern Indonesia's boundaries.
