Cobb & Co

Although American Freeman Cobb and his partners — John Murray Peck, James Swanton and John B. Lamber with financial support from George Train— established the American Telegraph Line of Coaches, using American-built wagons and Concord stagecoaches to operate daily coach services to the Victorian goldfields in 1853, the company and its various offshoots across the continent is better known as Cobb & Co.

The business rose to great prominence through the late 19th century, carrying passengers and mail to various Australian goldfields, and regional and remote areas. Although high overhead costs and the rise of faster and cheaper transport options for mail and passengers led to the company's demise, their last horse-drawn stagecoach service ran in Queensland — from Surat to Yuleba — as recently as August 1924.
