Australian United Steam Navigation Company
Formed in 1887 by the merger of the Australasian Steam Navigation Company and the Queensland Steam Shipping Company, the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company (AUSNC) operated services around the Australian coast and the Pacific Islands — particularly Fiji — until competition from commercial airlines prompted the company to discontinue its passenger services and fractious relations with the waterside workers and maritime unions caused the company to quit the shipping business altogether in 1961.
