Five Archer brothers in Brisbane, Queensland, 1867 From left: Alexander Archer, Thomas Archer. Lionel Knight Rice, James Archer and Archibald Archer. William Archer is seated. Of the other brothers, Charles and John were no longer alive, while David and Colin were living in England and Norway, respectively. Thomas was visiting Queensland from Scotland, where he and his family then lived.
Lionel Knight Rice — Jane Austen's grand-nephew — arrived in Australia aboard the'Great Victoria' in January 1866; William Archer was another passenger. Rice ran Mount Spencer Station near Mackay with various relations (the Finch-Hattons) and colleagues until he left Australia in the 1890s.
