Donald Thomson

Melbourne-born anthropologist and ornithologist Donald Finlay Fergusson Thomson (1901 – 1970) carried out fieldwork among the people of Cape York Peninsula and Arnhem Land, worked as a government patrol officer in Arnhem Land, favoured developing a policy which would allow Aboriginal people to work out their own destiny and actively opposed the development of the Woomera Rocket range because of the inevitable effect on the lives of desert-dwelling people. He is best known for his studies of the Pintupi and Yolngu peoples, and his intervention in the Caledon Bay crisis.
