Awoonga Dam/Lake Awoonga

Located on the Boyne River, around 30 kilometres south of Gladstone, Lake Awoonga is the region's main water supply. Built in the 1950s, the dam wall was raised shortly after the original structure was completed. Further raisings completed in March 1985 and 2002 increased the dam's capacity to 777,000 megalitres, and the current structure's design allows for further expansion if necessary.
Awoonga is reputedly an Aboriginal word indicating indicating sheet of water, though the language or dialect it came from remains unidentified.
