Established in March 2008 by amalgamating five previous local government areas — the Town of Dalby, the Shires of Chinchilla, Murilla, Tara and Wambo, and Division 2 of the Shire of Taroom — the Western Downs Region covers an area of 37,937 square kilometres, administered from Dalby. Initially named the Dalby Region, it was renamed Western Downs — most of the region lies west of Dalby — in August 2009.
