Sunshine Coast Region

Located on Gubbi Gubbi Country around 90 kilometres north of Brisbane's CBD, the Sunshine Coast Region was created in 2008 by the amalgamation of the City of Caloundra and the Maroochy and Noosa Shires, encompassing most of the area generally labelled the Sunshine — as opposed to the GoldCoast.

Following a strong majority vote in favour of de-amalgamation by residents in March 2013, the Shire of Noosa was reinstated in January 2014.

The Sunshine Coast comprises several urban sub-regions: Caloundra, Kawana Waters, Maroochydore, Buderim, Coolum and Nambour. Each sub-region features a central business district and surrounding suburban developments, which the Regional Council treats as distinct entities for planning and amenity purposes. Suburbs and localities within these sub-regions are detailed on the following pages.
