Located in the Burnett River's southern catchment and administered from Kingaroy, 160 kilometres northwest of Brisbane, the 8,382 square kilometre South Burnett Region was created in 2008 by amalgamating the Shires of Kingaroy, Nanango, Murgon and Wondai. The Aboriginal Shire of Cherbourg is an enclave within the South Burnett Region, but is separately administered.
