Centred on the twin cities of Hervey Bay and Maryborough, the Fraser Coast Region was created in 2008 from the amalgamation of the two cities, the Shire of Woocoo and most of the Shire of Tiaro. The rest of Tiaro Shire became part of the Gympie Region.
