Palmer River Goldfield
Located one hundred and forty kilometres southwest of Cooktown, largely in Kuku-Yalanji country, the Palmer River was one of Australia's most significant gold rush locations. William Hann and geologist Norman Taylor found traces of gold in the river's sandy bed in 1872. Hann named the river after Queensland Premier Arthur Hunter Palmer. The rush began after James Venture Mulligan reported payable gold in the same area the following year.
