Lying between Abbot Point and Cape Upstart, around 35 kilometres west-northwest of Bowen and 65 kilometres east-southeast of Ayr, Abbot Bay is named after Robert George Abbot, who, along with A.J. Richardson, surveyed the area in the 1880s.
