Palm Island Group
Originally named the Palm Isles when James Cook sailed past the group in the Endeavour in June 1770, the Palm Island Group's islands lie in Manbarra (Wulgurukaba) country in the Hinchinbrook Shire and the Aboriginal Shire of Palm Island.
Palm Island usually refers to the group's largest island (Great Palm Island, a.k.a. Bwgcolman: one people from many groups), the only island with a significant permanent population and the location of an Aboriginal Reserve since the inhabitants of the Hull River Mission were relocated there in 1918. Other notable islands within the group are Fantome (Eumilli, the former site of a leper colony); Orpheus (Goolboddi, a national park with a privately-owned tourist resort and marine science research facility) and Pelorus (North Palm Island, Yanooa, Guyroogarrie; uninhabited, but privately owned).
Islands in the rest of the group include:
- Barber Island (Boodthean)
- Brisk Island (Culgarul)
- Curacoa Island (Noogoo or Inoogoo)
- Eclipse Island (Garoogubbee)
- Esk Island (Soopun)
- Falcon Island (Carbooroo)
- Fly Island
- Havannah Island
