Mount Adolphus Islands



The islands in the Mount Adolphus Group lie across from Albany Island on the northern side of the Adolphus Channel, around 15 kilometres east-northeast of 'The Tip' of Cape York Peninsula, 47 kilometres east of Thursday Island, 40 kilometres northeast of Bamaga, and around 775 kilometres north-northwest of Cairns.

Noted shipwrecks in the waters around the islands include :
  • The barque Aliquis, bound from Port Jackson to Calcutta (May 1839)
  • RMS Quetta (28 February 1890)

Islands in the Mount Adolphus Group:
Mount Adolphus Island (Djagaraga: Muri or Mori) is just under 4.5 kilometres long, and just over 2 kilometres wide at its widest point. The island's highest elevation is the flat-topped Mount Adolphus (178 metres). It was named after George III's tenth child, Prince Adulphus Frederick, Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850).
Little Adolphus Island
Lacey Island, misspelt, but named after Emily Lacy (1873-1951) of St Helens, Mackay, who survived the wreck of RMS Quetta, after spending 36 hours in the water.
