Bourke Isles



Located west of the Cumberland Passage in the Torres Strait, the Bourke Isles are approximately 130 kilometres northeast of Thursday Island and 54 kilometres southwest of Erub (Darnley Island). The islands were named after New South Wales Governor Sir Richard Bourke in June 1836 by Charles Lewis, commander of the colonial schooner Isabella, sent from Sydney to search for survivors of the barque Charles Eaton, which had been wrecked on the Great Detached Reef, near the Sir Charles Hardy Islands on 15 August 1834.
