Great Detached Reef
Situated off Cape York Peninsula's eastern coast, around 160 kilometres east of Lockhart River and Cape Grenville, just south of the Raine Island entrance, the Great Detached Reef ("one of the greatest ship-traps on the Great Barrier Reef") is a complex of reefs on an old fossil mountain range. Its approximately 46 kilometres of edge, with cliffs dropping down over 400 metres and small caves scattered across the walls, make it a significant site for recreational divers.
