Almaden
Located on the Burke Development Road on Mbarbaram and Agwamin/Ewamain country 85 kilometres west of Atherton and 125 kilometres west-southwest of Cairns in the Mareeba Shire, the former mining town and locality of Almaden takes its name from Almadén in Spain's Cuidad Real Province — a noted source of mercury. Queensland's Almaden's mineral deposits are are tripolite (a fine particulate form of fossiliferous, opaline silica).
The town developed at the junction of the Mareeba-to-Chillagoe railway line and the Etheridge line. The weekly Savannahlander tourist train makes its first overnight stop at Almaden, offering passengers a choice of accommodation in the township or at Chillagoe.
The former Almaden State School is now a tourist park.
