Rosslea

Located in Wulgurukaba country, four kilometres southwest of central Townsville, Rosslea is bounded to the east and south by the Ross River. The northern and western boundaries are less clear; one might suggest Queens Road on the north and Bowen Road to the west, but the official boundaries are Sweet Street and Hodel Street, with the bottom of Mabin Street delineating Rosslea from Mundingburra. The suburb takes its name from John Deane’s property of the same name: a combination of the Ross River and lea (a grassy meadow). After stints on the goldfields in Ravenswood and Charters Towers Deane had moved into the pastoral industry and had interests in meatworks at Alligator Creek, Ross River and Sellheim.

The eastern half of the suburb is occupied by Townsville Golf Club, which relocated to a course overlooking the river in Rosslea in April 1924 after earlier incarnations at Kissing Point and Aitkenvale. The rest of the suburb is a combination of residential accommodation and commercial properties, including a number of motels along Bowen Road, which was for many years the main route into central Townsville from the south.
