Herbert River
The southernmost of Queensland's wet tropics river systems, the Herbert River, was named in 1864 by George Elphinstone Dalrymple after Queensland's first premier, Robert George Wyndham Herbert.
From the confluence of the Millstream and the Wild River on the Atherton Tableland west of Herberton and north of Ravenshoe, the Herbert flows for 288 kilometres in a generally southeastern direction through Warungu and Warrgamay country. After the Stone River joins it near Lannercost, the Herbert flows past Ingham and enters the Coral Sea near Lucinda, at the southern end of the Hinchinbrook Channel, 130 kilometres north of Townsville.
The upper reaches of the river's 10,130 square kilometre catchment are mainly used for cattle grazing, with the lower floodplain largely devoted to sugar cane. The middle reaches include National Parks, State Forests and parts of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.
