Bellenden Ker Range

Also known as the Wooroonooran Range, the Bellenden Ker Range is located between Gordonvale and Babinda.

Noted but not named by Cook in 1770, the range was named by Lieutenant Phillip Parker King RN on 22 June 1819 aboard HM Colonial Cutter Mermaid after John Bellenden Ker, at the suggestion of Allan Cunningham, the botanist accompanying King aboard the Mermaid.

The Mulgrave River rises on the range's southwestern slopes, and the area's high rainfall has resulted in several waterfalls cascading off the range, including Kearneys Falls, Fishery Falls, Josephine Falls, Tchupala Falls, Wallicher Falls, Nandroya Falls, Silver Creek Falls, Whites Falls, and Clamshell Falls.

Bellenden Ker township, adjacent to the Bellenden Ker Range, was to be called Millville in anticipation of a new sugar mill in the area. The mill was never built, and the area was named after the dominating mountain and range. Queensland's two highest peaks, Mount Bartle Frere (1622 m) and Mount Bellenden Ker (1593 m), form part of the range. Walsh's Pyramid (922 m), one of the highest free-standing natural pyramids in the world, sits at the range's northern end.
