James Cook University

Queensland's second-oldest university, James Cook University (JCU), opened as the University College of Townsville in February 1961 and became the autonomous James Cook University of North Queensland in April 1970. The original campus was on Fulham Road, Pimlico, across from Pimlico High School. A staged relocation to a more extensive 386-hectare campus at Douglas near Lavarack Barracks in the lee of Mount Stuart began in 1967.

A process of expansion began in January 1982, when JCU amalgamated with the adjacent Townsville College of Advanced Education located in Douglas. It continued as new campuses opened in Cairns (1987), Singapore (2003), Brisbane (2006), and Townsville City (2015).

At the time of writing, JCU operates three main campuses in Townsville, Cairns, and Singapore, with a fourth campus in Brisbane offering courses in accounting, business, education, hospitality, information technology, and tourism to international students. Study centres in Mount Isa, Mackay, Thursday Island, and Rockhampton provide programs and support for students in remote and rural areas.
