In May 2016, the Queensland Government purchased the 56,295-hectare Springvale Station, located east of Lakeland in Kuku-Yalanji Country, around 54 kilometres southwest of Cooktown, to reduce sediment runoff into the Normanby River catchment, which flows into Princess Charlotte Bay and affects the Great Barrier Reef. The property became the Springvale Station Nature Refuge in October 2017.
