Miranda Downs
With its homestead located at 17° 20' 00" S / 141° 53' 00" E, fifty kilometres east-northeast of Normanton and around 1600 kilometres northwest of Brisbane in the Gulf Savannah, the 438,000ha Miranda Downs station was one of several properties taken up by John Graham Macdonald between 1863 and 1865on behalf of a syndicate comprising five-times New South Wales premier Sir John Robertson, Sir Alexander Stuart, Captain Robert Towns and Macdomald himself.
According to Edward Palmer's Early Days in North Queensland and Logan Jack's Northmost Australia, Donald Etheridge was overlanding a mob of cattle from the syndicate's Carpentaria Downs to Miranda Downs when he discovered the Etheridge River; other sources suggest Richard Daintree named the river after Robert Etheridge, a member of the Victorian Government;'s staff.
