Mount Isa

Located about 1235 kilometres west-southwest of Townsville and 1570 kilometres northwest of Brisbane on Kalkadoon country, Mount Isa is the Gulf Country's administrative, commercial and industrial centre. It came into existence because of the vast mineral deposits found in the area. Mount Isa Mines (MIM) is one of the most productive mines in world history, based on combined production of lead, silver, copper and zinc.

The Leichhardt River divides the city into Mineside — with the mine and associated infrastructure, power station and airport — and Townside — the majority of the city's residential areas, the CBD and hospital.

Before European contact, the region around the Isa was part of an extensive trade network across the Lake Eyre Basin and beyond, producing prized stone for stone tools, including hand axes.
