Peninsula Developmental Road
The 571-kilometre Peninsula Developmental Road runs from Lakeland to Weipa via Laura, Coen and Archer River, providing the main road transport route within Cape York Peninsula and a vital link to the rest of the Australian mainland.
Initially unsealed, the PDR's gravel and dirt corrugations, along with predictable issues with mud, sand, and dust in changing conditions, made travel within the Cape challenging. Progressive sealing of the highway, jointly funded by the Federal and Queensland governments, began in 2014; by April 2022, two hundred kilometres remained unsealed.
