Peak Downs Highway

Linking the Bruce Highway at Mackay and the Gregory Highway at Clermont, the 266 Peak Downs Highway passes through Yuwi, Biri, Baradha, Barna and Wangan Country, representing the main link between the Whitsunday Coast and Queensland's Central West region.

As the primary access route for workers, machinery and supplies to the Bowen Basin coal mines, the narrow two-lane highway is often congested with oversize loads and road trains. It represents a significant hazard to fatigued long-haul DIDO (Drive-in, Drive-out) mine workers.

Major settlements along the route include Walkerston, Nebo, Moranbah — 10 kilometres north of the highway, but the largest town along the route — and Clermont.
