Flinders Highway
Formerly known as National Route 78, the Flinders Highway (also known as Overlanders Way) links Townsville and Cloncurry, passing through Charters Towers, Pentland, Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek and numerous smaller centres en route. From Cloncurry, the road continues to the Northern Territory border at Camooweal as the Barkly Highway.
While the section from Townsville to Charters Towers was sealed by 1957, the unsealed remainder was gradually upgraded, with the last section completed in November 1976.
The second stage of the Ross River Dam necessitated realigning the section of the highway between Oak Valley and Woodstock. The work was completed by 1986.
