Savannah Way

Promoted as a self-drive tourist route, and an interconnected collection of highways and lesser roads rather than a single well-defined entity, the Savannah Way runs across northern Australia's tropical savannahs, connecting Cairns and Broome via Mount Surprise, Georgetown, Croydon, Normanton, Burketown, Borroloola, Katherine, Kununurra, Fitzroy Crossing and Derby.

Although much of the route coincides with Highway 1 and the National Highway network, substantial sections of its alternative routes include unsealed roads. While the end-to-end distance is around 3,700 kilometres, detours to locations that do not coincide with the most direct route can make the journey a much longer one.

In Queensland, signposted options en route may take travellers to Chillagoe and Karumba via the Burke Developmental Road; to Georgetown via Einasleigh, bypassing Mount Surprise; from Burketown to Doomadgee via Gregory Downs, Riversleigh and Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park.
