Top End

The Northern Territory’s Top End stretches across approximately 245,000 square kilometres from Darwin and its hinterland to Arnhem Land, bordered by the Indian Ocean to the west, the Arafura Sea to the north and the Gulf of Carpentaria to the east. A belt of transitional tropical savannas and woodlands south of Katherine forms a gradual transition from the Top End and semi-arid mulga scrubland, mallee, and sand dunes towards the Red Centre.

The coast is dotted with islands, including the Tiwi Islands (Bathurst and Melville Islands), Groote Eylandt and numerous smaller islands.

Much of the area, including Kakadu —Australia's largest National Park and a World Heritage Site — is traditionally managed by Aboriginal land trusts.
