Bowling Green Bay National Park
Located within the City of Townsville and Burdekin Shire, around 30 kilometres southeast of Townsville and 44 kilometres west-northwest of Ayr. Bowling Green Bay National Park protects a diverse range of habitats, including the rugged landscape surrounding Mount Elliot and coastal estuaries between Cape Cleveland and Cape Bowling Green.
The park incorporates the Haughton River floodplain — one of the largest wetlands on Australia's east coast — with mud and sand flats, swamps, mangrove forests and intertidal flats. Bare salt pans behind the mangrove areas are a unique characteristic of North Queensland wetlands — the result of comparatively low rainfall and a short wet season that fails to wash the accumulated salt away.
