Nome

Located in Bindal Country about 18 kilometres southeast of Townsville, the rural locality of Nome lies on the north side of the Bruce Highway and the North Coast Railway line. The locality — which has no connection to the location mentioned in Johnny Horton's North To Alaska — incorporates several neighbourhoods, including Oolbun and Killymoon. The name apparently derives from a misreading of name of the station — the NQME (North Queensland Meat Export) Siding — where the branch line to the Alligator Creek meatworks joined the main line.

The Billabong Sanctuary lies at the locality's western extremity.
