Mount Elliot
Mount Elliot rises to a peak of 1220 metres above sea level, forming the watershed between the Ross River, flowing into Cleveland Bay, and the Haughton, which flows into Bowling Green Bay. Alligator Creek and its waterfall were popular recreation destinations within the surrounding Bowling Green Bay National Park.
Thomas Stewart, captain of the Lady Elliot, which sailed from Calcutta to Sydney in 1815-1816, is believed to have named the mountain. His vessel was lkely named after the wife of British diplomat and colonial administrator Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 1st Earl of Minto.
Shipwreck survivor James Morrill lived with the Aboriginal clan whose country included Mount Elliot and the surrounding area between 1846 and 1863.
