Originally part of the Caboolture Division — one of the seventy-four divisions created under the Divisional Boards Act 1879 — the Redcliffe Division was created in April 1888. Under the Local Authorities Act 1902, it became the Shire of Redcliffe at the end of March 1903. It subsequently became the Town of Redcliffe (28 May 1921) and the City of Redcliffe (13 June 1959) before being merged with two neighbouring Shires — Pine Rivers and Caboolture — to become the Moreton Bay Region.

The City of Redcliffe included the following suburbs:
Redcliffe
Clontarf
Kippa-Ring
Margate
Newport
Rothwell
Scarborough
Woody Point
